Its success was proof that the time was right for making inroads into the Asian market, and these first steps taken side by side with the IWMA resulted in our mutual global market presence and competence. The first staging of wire Singapore in 1995 was an enormous challenge for our team at Messe Düsseldorf. Little did I know at that time that my relationship with the association would change to becoming its partner in hosting the event when it moved to Messe Düsseldorf in 1986.
In those days, in my role as manager of one of Düsseldorf’s first class hotels, I was fortunate enough to welcome members of the Executive Committee of the IWMA to a fact finding mission in Düsseldorf. Prior to my involvement in the exhibition industry, I became aware of a trade show called wire that was about to move from Basle to Düsseldorf. However, we always managed to resolve conflict and put in place longstanding agreements between our respective organisations, not least due to the fact that he was a conscientious listener, effective communicator and responsible decision maker. Goal, which did not necessarily mean that we were always of the same opinion. Above all, I look back on our many years of co-operation with much joy and appreciation and great respect for our partners at the IWMA. It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the IWMA on its 40th anniversary and I regard it as a great honour to have been asked for a contribution to the commemorative book.
